2016 Gift Guide: Dice Games

Ever play a game where you feel perpetually outmatched by your opponents? It’s a regular occurrence for me since I frequently play games with some extremely intelligent and strategic individuals (3 of whom live in my house). That’s one of the reasons I love dice games so much; even the most skillful of players are at the mercy of the dice.
So this year, we decided to put together a gift guide for people who like having that element of chance ingrained in a game. You’ve already seen the first Family Games gift guide as well as one for Stocking Stuffers and over the next few weeks we will publish guides with games, toys, home items, electronics and more. Each will detail 10 or so product with links to where you can read more or purchase the product. If you see the logo, click on it to be directed to an in-depth review!

Ninja Dice
Greenbrier Games

Ninja Dice is a fast-paced, push-your-luck dice game with a unique mechanic: it’s not just what you roll, where the dice land is important! Each turn in Ninja Dice you create a house filled with challenges and use your ninja skills to beat them. Move quick! The other ninjas are also rolling dice to attack you (and each other) because the ninja with the most treasure wins! Ninja Dice introduces a mechanic that allows certain dice to modify other dice based on how they land. Dice that have a line on their front edge can modify the other dice partially or completely in front of them, like an arc of fire.
Order of the Gilded Compass
Grey Fox Games

Order of the Gilded Compass is a dice assignment game for 2-5 players. In this game, each player takes on the role of a treasure hunter seeking invitation to join the most prestigious of archaeological secret societies. Players scour the globe to unearth fantastic and valuable artifacts. By assigning their archaeologist dice to the right locations at the right time, players acquire treasure maps and specialists to follow them, dive for sunken treasure, acquire rare finds at the auction house and even enlist the help of the illuminati. The player who has the most treasure at the end of the game earns an invitation to the order of the gilded compass and wins.

The Annual Wizard Talent Show only comes around…well, once a year. Speed is the key as everyone is casting at the same time and Feat cards magically alter the rules each round. It’ll keep you on your toes and always looking for a new strategy. Some spells even come with an ability to slow down the competition. Hey, a little gamesmanship never hurt anyone. The first wizard to complete six spells wins the game, earning Magical Bragging Rights (much better than the normal kind)!
Qubosity
PlayMonster

It’s the think-fast, fun party game that’s challenging without being intimidating! Roll the big cubes to get your nine categories – like contagious things, buffet foods, hotties or colors, and then press the timer to get your letter. Now take turns naming things in a category that start with that letter! Grab the cube when you name something, but if the random timer stops on your turn, you lose that round! with 54 categories and 21 letters, the game is different each time you play!
Dice games are fun and add a variable that helps level the playing field. You may not have heard of most of these, but they are from reputable companies that create fantastic games. Maybe you can roll a few of these under your tree! Again, look for the tiny logo on titles that we’ve previously given a full preview.
