Outdoor Sports and Fair Skin Do Not Mix
Once again we skipped a season. Our weather went from record-setting cold to above-average highs in the span of a week. We actually had a freeze and frost on May 17th, two days after our supposed last freeze date! Luckily the forecast for Memorial Day weekend was much better, with the highs in the low 80’s and only a few thundershowers predicted. In previous years our Summer weekends were typically spent indoors at a local school, thanks to weekly swim meets. Here in Iowa there aren’t very many outdoor competition pools, so worrying about their Irish & Norwegian fair skin was never an issue. This year is different as we took a break from the rigors of being on a competitive swim team and traded it for 8-10 weeks of track & field. All of a sudden we had a new worry – sunburns! Thankfully Walmart had us covered – a full island of every sunscreen under the sun (ha!) right as you walked into the store! Even better is you have the chance of winning $100 in their giveaway!
Lately we’ve been really bad about forgetting to print coupons before going to the store, but not this time. Banana Boat had some right on their web page that would save us $1.00 per bottle! We knew Banana Boat had a number of different products formulated for different uses (Kid’s Alcohol-Free SPF 50 Clear Spray, a Protect & Hydrate 50 Lotion & Protect & Hydrate 50 Spray, one especially for men called “Men’s SPF 50 Lotion” and even some specifically for sports aptly named “Sport SPF 50 Clear Spray), so multiple coupons were needed!
When I was much younger, the only sunscreen options we had were the filmy, sticky lotions that you had to rub and rub to work it into your skin. Today’s products are so much more convenient; spray it on and go! Even better, the kids can self-apply it!
Now I won’t make any claims regarding the effectiveness of this product in relation to on-track performance, but even though this was their first track meet ever, the girls did come home with a handful of ribbons! Increased aerodynamics maybe? Reduced drag?
I also picked up the Men’s SPF 30 Clear Spray, having never used a gender-specific sunscreen before. Alas, the team brought pop-up tents so I was able to rest safely in the shade all day. But now I have it on hand for next week’s (and the week after, and the week after) competitions. They also had a Men’s SPF 50 Lotion that I may try next time when I anticipate more time in the sun for myself, and a new Sport SPF 50 Clear Spray that looked promising as well.
To help celebrate the coming (finally) of warmer weather, Banana Boat is having a “Wheel of Fun” contest on their Facebook page. You might also enjoy seeing what else they’re up to by following the hastags #BBBestSummer or #CollectiveBias on all of your favorite social media sites.
Since we’re competing outside, Banana Boat sunscreen will now be a staple in our sport bag this season. What sports do your kids participate in during the summer and what special items do you pack in your bag?
My kids have been doing lots of swimming this summer. Sunscreen is a definitely plus to keep on hand and we also keep lots of water, and snacks with us while we’re out.
Congratulations to your daughters on a great track meet! I also have very fair skin, and sunscreen is essential if I want to have a happy summer!
We love our Banana Boat sunscreen. We just used some earlier when we were in the pool.
Such fair skin! It must have worked if they spent all day at Track & Field and didn’t burn. Congratulations on the ribbons too!
Great tips. We love Banana Boat as I feel it keeps my kids safe from burning in the sun.
My daughter has super fair skin and burns quite easily. I actually keep samples of banana boat tucked in my purse, a full bottle is stashed in my car, and we always try to remember to pack some when we know we are going to be out in the sun for long periods of time.
No children so no sports events to sit in the sun and worry about sunburn! As I get older I have noticed that I do not burn as readily but that doesn’t mean I don’t wear sunscreen! I will browse the shelves that have the Banana Boat brand and see what would be good for me.
As a fair skinned girlie myself, I can attest to this! Great info!
I have fair skin and have to be very careful.. I can burn after only about 10 minutes in the sun. LOVE Banana Boat!!
If i took a picture of our stock of suntan lotion, that picture of the shelf would be what you see.. This is all my wife buys!
Banana Boat is definitely my go to sunblock spray that I use! I might be a dark skinned Italian, but even we need some sun protection! lol. Also, thanks for the coupon! I didn’t realize that they had any available! I’m all about saving a dollar when I can.
I love banana boat sunscreen products too! 🙂
Hurrah for pop-up tents! I like Banana Boat. Now I’m off to go spin the wheel!
Sunscreens are always great choice before going out on summer 🙂 But I have never heard of this banana boat sunscreen products!
Lots more options today than ever before.
Sunscreen is expensive. Thanks for the coupon!
Looks like your girls had an amazing time outside! Thank you for pointing that coupon out – very useful! #client
That’s the truth for sure!! I need some of this men stuff. What makes it manly? The scent? I would love to try that for hubs. He is fair skinned and so is my older daughter.
Never knew how important it was to use sunscreen. Here I am now, and i use it like crazy.
