The internet has made the world a much smaller place. Thanks to Facebook, I’ve learned more about the cultures, history, foods and celebrations of friends from across the country and world. At conventions, I’ve taken the time to ask friends with different religious, ethnic and regional backgrounds about their customs and beliefs. I think it’s important to absorb as much as possible because the more we know about others, the better we can relate their lives and situations.
This year’s guide to gifts for younger children included Songs in the Shade of the Cashew and Coconut Trees: Lullabies and Nursery Rhymes from West Africa and the Caribbean from The Secret Mountain. It’s a picture book and CD that includes songs and stories of the region and is a nice opportunity to introduce kids to other cultures and traditions.
