Tutti Frutti Matching Game Overview
This summer’s Gen Con convention was quite a different experience for our daughters. Usually they spend their time roaming the exhibitor’s hall or popping into a seminar or two. It’s one of the few conventions we feel comfortable letting them explore on their own as long as they don’t leave the facility. This year was their third time attending and they’ve become pros at finishing up the scavenger hunts, gathering promo buttons and sitting down for game demos. So much so that they wanted to take a crack at it themselves!
For a few hours each day they worked in Gigamic‘s booth, usually over the lunch hour so other volunteers could take a meal break. It was an easy chore for them as they are very familiar with their game line, having enjoyed Pylos, Katamino and Gloobz, among many others, here at home. One of their favorites to demonstrate to convention attendees was a small tin box game called Tutti Frutti. Quick to teach and just as quick to play, it was the perfect game choice for them to break the ice with a potential customer.
Tutti Frutti plays up to six and is a speed matching game unlike anything else in our collection. Included in the tin are 48 double-sided discs with various fruits depicted. All of the discs are spread out in the middle of the playing area and each participant gets ready to pick some fruit!
When the game begins, everyone randomly takes a disc from the table and looks at both sides of it. Your goal is to find a match on a different disc that corresponds to either image on the one in your hand. When you find one, grab it and place it on top of your new stack, with the two matching fruit facing each other.
That’s all there is to Tutti Frutti – a race to make the most matches! You may match either fruit on the top or bottom of your stack, remembering to put the newly-grabbed disc face-to-face with the one you’re matching to. Everyone acts at the same time, so expect those 48 tiles to disappear quite quickly! Once all the tiles are claimed, or no one can make any more matches, the game ends immediately.
Players compare the height of their stack and the tallest is checked for accuracy. If there were no mistakes (mis-matched fruit), then that player is the winner of Tutti Frutti. If an error is discovered, the next highest stack is examined. This continues until a valid matching stack is found and that person takes the victory!
Even though Tutti Frutti is advertised for ages 4+, you’d be surprised at how many young adults were willing to try to beat our girls in a round or two. Must’ve been something about losing to a young teenager that made them want to redeem themselves!
