Dyson Gets Supersonic With Hair Care

I don’t remember much about getting ready for school when I was in junior high or high school. I seem to recall always showering in the mornings unless I had an early morning track practice, grabbing a rolled pancake filled with brown sugar to eat on the go and years of super-early, long carpool commutes.

While I know I wore makeup, I have no recollection of when in the crazy morning schedule I put it on. And the only thing I recall about doing my hair is insisting on using the curling iron while my hair was still wet. It did the job just fine and saved the time and trouble of blow-drying. 80’s hair was all about how much hairspray you could use anyhow.

My girls don’t live out in the country like I did, but their commute via the bus to the distant junior high is equally as long. They get on the bus well before 7am so their morning schedules are almost as hectic as mine were. The difference is they opt to shower in the evenings rather than rush to do it in the morning. But when my schedule was tight, I could go to school with wet hair and it would be dry by the time I arrived there. Madison and Kennedy need to dry their hair thoroughly before calling it a night. Why? It’s simple math:

Wet hair + pillow = Ewwww.

We’ve been pretty open about Kennedy’s small stature and the challenges it brings. Clothing to match her age and personality is almost impossible (everything in her size has princesses on it) and it wasn’t until last year that we found a bicycle for her small size. What most people don’t realize is we have to improvise in other ways also. One big challenge has been with finding a hair dryer that she can use without my assistance. We found a travel hair dryer that is lightweight enough for her to handle and maneuver, it just takes a really long time for her to get the job done. More often than not, I grab a full size one to speed the process.

Then we discovered the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer. Ever since I saved gift cards and coupons to get my first Dyson vacuum, I’ve been a fan of the brand. We own an upright vacuum, a portable vacuum and even a robot vacuum. I’ve wanted a Dyson bladeless fan, but honestly we have ceiling fans in almost every room so we’ve just never made the investment. So a hair dryer by one of my favorite brands seemed just too good to pass up.

Unlike most hair dryers, the motor is in the handle and not the head. This simple design modification makes it easier for Kennedy to hold. It’s also a digital motor that uses technology to protect hair from the extreme heat damage common to people who blow dry their hair frequently. How is it different? The air temperature is measured 20 times every second to keep the temperatures under control.

It’s also super fast. The unique wind-tunnel style provides high velocity yet controlled airflow. It’s not a one trick pony though. The Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer offers three precise speed settings including fast drying, regular drying, and styling as well as four heat settings: constant cold, low, medium, and high. The magnetic attachments provide additional control with a smoothing nozzle, a styling concentrator and a diffuser.

And you know what is even more awesome than all that? It isn’t ridiculously noisy like so many hair dryers. The motor is tuned to produce one inaudible frequency combined with a vibration reduction system.

If you’re wondering what the girls thought of it, you’re in luck because, like their mom, they are pretty vocal with their opinions. After using the Dyson Supersonic the very first time, Madison informed me that she plans to keep it in her bathroom and I’ll just have to get over it. I’m pretty sure that’s now how it will happen but we’ll see. I asked her what she liked about it and Madison said she liked the different attachments. The diffuser attachment let her add some wave to her hair without needing to curl it. She also liked how easy it was to swap between attachments and rotate the direction of them.

Kennedy, on the other hand, liked the weight most but also that it was easy to use. Compared to the “big” hair dryer, it was tons easier to hold. While she said it wasn’t ultra fast for drying, it was tons faster than her small, lightweight travel dryer. As a mom, I want to clarify that it DID dry her hair faster than the normal hairdryer. The reason she didn’t notice the difference is because she never completely dries her hair. Usually it’s still wet enough that she needs to put a towel on her pillow.

Switching between settings on the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer is as easy as pressing a button. - SahmReviews.com

I personally like the ease of changing the settings. With a quick press, it rotates between the different speed and heat settings with the cold blast (for setting a style) in a totally different place. With every other model of hair dryer we own, the switches for moving between settings are stiff and require a good hold on the unit to switch. The Dyson Supersonic button options are a bonus to the weight and adjustable attachments!

  4. My hair is very thick and heavy, and one of my pet peeves with hair dryers was that they weren’t strong enough. This dryer is strong and versatile and would be great for someone with hair like me.

  5. Wow the Dyson hair dryer sounds like it was a big hit with your daughter ! I will look into prices on the Dyson hair dryer.

  6. That might be too noisy for my tastes. I prefer the Revlon’s quiet power hair dryer. Power and “quiet” all in one.

  7. Very good review on hair care technique. I love this brand and I saw it in the work of my hairdresser who works here. I liked its compact size and power. When it comes time to replace my hair dryer, I will definitely buy myself one.
