I have a confession. I have been coloring my hair for over half my life. I started at the age of 24, when I came across my first grey hair. I know that my natural hair color is a shade that my mother called “Dishwater Blonde.” Sort of a muddy color, that is not quite brunette, but not light or lustrous either. At this point in my life where I am firmly entrenched in middle age, it is also quite grey at the root. I have always been blessed with thick, but fine hair. The older I get the more I notice the feel of my hair is a bit rougher and wiry, due to all the grey underneath. One of these days (far, far in the future) I may give in and let it go silver. Until then I will keep coloring it, every two months, like clockwork.

When I was given the opportunity to review Madison Reed Hair Color, I was willing to give it a try. I can honestly say I have tried most every hair color brand on the market. I have also had my hair professionally colored a number of times in my life, with mixed results. I had yet to find a product that completely earned my loyalty.
The online ordering process was easy. I went to Madison Reed and went through the color options. I first had to determine if I was a warm or a cool, to find the right shade. A little online research gave me a tip to look at my wrist, if my veins looked blue I was a cool, if they looked greenish, I was a warm. I was most definitely a cool. After going through the color selection for my skin tone, I opted Capri Blonde 9NGV. I placed my order late in the evening on a Saturday, and on Monday morning I received an email notification that it shipped. It arrived on my doorstep on Tuesday afternoon. I was pleased with the quick shipping.

The contents of the box were similar to what I’ve found in other hair color kits. It came with developer solution and hair color, and an applicate bottle. The applicator bottle was easy to use. The tip was smooth against my scalp, which I appreciated. The kit also came with two quality sets of rubber gloves, a plastic cap, barrier cream and a cleansing wipe to use after coloring.

Before coloring I went back to watch the online tutorials on their website, which were easy to follow. I mixed the color as directed. I noticed that the color solution was very thick, not at all runny, which made it easy to apply. I also noticed that the scent was mild, similar to what you might find in unscented hand lotion. My husband, who was taking pictures through this process even commented that it didn’t smell bad at all, which was a ringing endorsement, as my hair coloring in the past had driven him out of the house because of the stench. I also didn’t feel any kind of burn or tingling on my scalp, something I’ve always associated with previous coloring processes.

I followed the directions and divided my hair into quadrants, and colored one quadrant at a time, starting at the roots. I opted for an all over hair treatment and finished with a full saturation of the remaining color solution, combing it through with a wide toothed comb. I popped the plastic cap on my head and, following the directions, waited 45 minutes, (my hair is grey and color resistant) and then rinsed out. I then washed with the shampoo and conditioner provided.

When my hair was dry, I checked, and it appeared my root coverage was excellent, I didn’t see any difference in color from root to end and it all my grey was covered completely. My hair was also soft and shiny.

Four days and two washings later, I still hadn’t notice any fading, and in fact, it looked better than the day I colored it. Overall, I thought Madison Reed hair color was an excellent product, that gave a salon quality hair color experience at about a quarter of the price.

  1. I think your color came out lovely. I would consider giving this a try down the road. Right now I do get professional highlights. I don’t have much grey even though I just turned 60.

  2. Hair coloring products can be sometimes harsh, and leaves our hair dry and brittle. I love that your review mentioned Madison Reed hair coloring products did not damage your hair in any way, keeping it soft and smooth. I will have to try this.

  3. I have finally let my hair go silver streaked! Even when I went to a professional–the grey still was stubborn and would not leave entirely. So I decided it was time–save money and leave it alone (I will be 65 in a week or two so I deem myself old enough!).

  4. I always hate the smell of the hair coloring so I’m glad to hear that you found a hair coloring without an unpleasant smell but still comes out nicely. Thanks for the tip of checking your veins to determine if you’re warm or cool colors.

  5. Wow! You hair looks amazing and I’m thrilled to know that you liked the product. I don’t dye my hair but I love the fact that it covered your greys. Mine are starting to show so I may have to go this route once they start appearing.

  6. The less noticeable smell would be the winner for me. I hate that smell but love how my hair looks colored. I may have to give Madison Reed a try when I am due for color again, sounds like a great product.

  7. The color looks great on you! I am one of the rare women I know that does not color their hair frequently, but I feel that is only because I do not have visible grays yet. Once they arrive, everything changes!

  8. Your hair came out lovely! It looks so shiny and healthy. My SIL tried Madison Reed and really liked it too. I find that drugstore hair color doesn’t cover my gray as well as I’d like. It doesn’t matter what the box says. But I get it because it’s inexpensive. I may try Madison Reed after seeing your results.

  9. I know this post was in 2015 but I am just now exploring this brand and this exact color. Thanks for the review and I will be purchasing this exact color! I hope it comes out as good on me!
