The Right Tools for the Job

One thing I can never have enough of in the kitchen is cutting boards. I have tried all types. Traditional wooden, bamboo, various types of plastic (thick and thin) as well as ones custom made from Corian. Each have their benefits and drawbacks. That said, I’m always on the lookout for one that is just a bit better than the others.

My last plastic cutting boards from Walmart claimed they were dishwasher safe. I can’t argue that point, as they did survive. What they also did was warp. It is no fun trying to cut a vegetable on a cutting board that doesn’t sit flat on the counter. It is probably very unsafe too, but I can’t attribute any lost blood to the board.

Most of my cutting boards are the typical flat type and nothing fancy about them. We recently had the opportunity to try out a board/knife set from Chefcoo that has a design I’ve been looking for in a cutting board but had only seen in pricier models.

One side is a standard flat cutting board, but flip it over and you’ll notice raised ridges along the edges as well as a channel on one end to guide the cuttings into a bowl when you’re scraping them off the board. The edge ridges help keep any juices from running onto the counter while the non-slip thermal plastic rubber edges keep it in place. There is also a soft tapered handle to make picking it up and carrying much easier than a standard cutting board.

But you’ll also get a set of three knives with this board, a very nice bonus for the price. But let’s not kid ourselves, for under $30 for the complete set, these aren’t high-end German-made artisanal products. The non-stick coating on the sides of the blades is nice, and having them color-coded will make picking out the right knife for the job much easier once you develop your own system.

And the soft-grip handles do make for a comfortable hold. But…there are elements of the knife that were obviously sacrificed in the name of price. The bolster (the part between the handle and the blade) is chromed plastic. Ours came already chipped, and will definitely not hold up over time. The smallest of the knives, the paring knife, came warped. This was probably due to the packaging process, but it is bent enough to worry me when cutting a small item.

I am disappointed that this was the case, because otherwise it is a beautiful set. Discarding the paring knife, I will be using the other knives and the cutting board will definitely get counter time with us. At around $25 for the set, it isn’t a bad bargain just for the nice cutting board. Consider the knives as an extra bonus.

You can find a set for yourself on Amazon or directly from Chefcoo via their website. Follow them on Facebook to keep tabs on new product announcement or special discounts!

  1. How does the board hold out? Does it seem to get scratched easily? As I am looking to buy a new cutting board.
The best pairing knife I have found to use is a real cheap one from the Dollar Tree. I bought it when mine came up missing til I bought a new set. I liked it so much. I went and bought enough to make a set.

    1. So far so good on the cutting board. I love the ridges on the edges. I haven’t notice scratching yet, but since it is a similar plastic to my old one, I’m sure it will scratch/gouge over time. I find it is better for my knives to have one that does scratch, as a harder one would certainly dull the knives quicker.

  2. First time to your site Scott and I’m already a fan. Like the clarity of your review and the great photos. I wonder if this company is trying to get some glow off the Cutco name, a fabulous line of knives. (not sure if they have other kitchen products).

This is a great concept! I’ll be back.

    1. Thanks for the kind words Kimberly! You make a great point about the Cutco name – I’m very familiar with them having received a nice set for our wedding that we still use 20+ years later!

  3. I love these! We have a Kitchenaid set of knives and they are AWFUL! The red paint is peeling off and I’m always finding bits and pieces on the cutting board! Plus they are so dull. Dull enough to wear they would give a nasty cut! I’m going to look into getting these!

  4. I love the bamboo cutting boards but seem to have problems as they quickly warp. I’ve yet to find a chef’s knife I love. I’m still searching for “the one.”

  5. I would love to have a cutting board that would catch part of the mess. We cut up a lot of fruit and that gets messy quick – this would save me so much time.

  6. Looks like a nice set especially the cutting board. I don’t have any luck with plastic cutting boards. That’s a bummer about the knives but I guess not horrible for the price.
