Blockbuster movies are something we’re pretty fond of. If there’s something major coming out, we make plans to see it in the theater. It isn’t uncommon for us to see a few a month and during the summer, sometimes one a week. We’ve even gotten into Comic Conventions to see people like Stan Lee speak. Unfortunately, some movies don’t get the same blockbuster advertising as others and often go somewhat unnoticed until we discover them on a movie channel, DVD/Blu-Ray or on Netflix. We enjoy to watch movies that tell a good story, explain a life lesson or teach kids about things like fitness and healthy eating.

Cowgirls ‘N Angels 2: Dakota’s Summer is a great example:

Oscar® Winner Keith Carradine* (Cowboys & Aliens) stars alongside a young, popular cast that includes Haley Ramm (X-Men: The Last Stand), Jade Pettyjohn (American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars), and Emily Bett Rickards (Arrow) in this inspiring second chapter of the beloved Cowgirls ’N Angels story! After she receives unexpected news about herself, a 17-year-old girl (Ramm) experiences an exciting, yet challenging life in and out of the rodeo circuit in this wonderful coming- of-age story. Filled with heart, horses and high-reaching adventure, Cowgirls ’N Angels 2: Dakota’s Summer is an uplifting reminder that with courage, friendship and passion, anything is possible.

The girls and I sat down to watch it together and found that it was filled with heartfelt messages and lessons about life. As the mom of tweens daughters, the years ahead of me will include the normal turmoil of girls growing up so I was really touched by many parts of the story. Upon receiving news that she was adopted, Dakota turned away from her family in search of answers. She felt like she had been lied to and deceived and forgot all the things her parents had done for her. What Dakota discovered is that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side. I don’t want to spoil it, so that’s as much as I’ll say, but I can tell you that isn’t all there is. There are also several sub-plots involving supporting characters that touches on topics such as adoption, foster care, friendship and relationships.

Miss K said it’s a good mother/daughter movie “about a girl falling apart from her family. The movie is about a lot of relationships like family relationships, sister relationships and more. When Dakota is told the truth, she feels like she isn’t part of the family any more.” Miss K said she would definitely recommend it.  Miss M said she would give it a 7 or 8 out of 10 and was a good movie but it moves pretty slow. That didn’t surprise me though; she’s more of an action/adventure/sci-fi fan for both movies and books. I honestly figured it would be perfect for Miss K but wasn’t sure about Miss M. I was correct. The interesting part is that neither focused on the fact it had horses in it, which is something the movie description highlights!

Cowgirls ‘n Angels 2: Dakota’s Summer is available on Blu-Ray or you can rent it from Amazon for only $3.99. Learn more by connecting with the movie on Facebook and Twitter.

  1. I’ll look out for that one on Netflix. Going to the movies is one of my favorite things to do – we have a season ticket and can go as often as we like. Sometimes my husband is not so keen on the girly/weepie type movies though 🙂

  2. i’m a cowgirl at heart! I grew up around horses and farms and all that jazz. I love heartfelt movies like this one with horses, and girls finding out how to have heart. I can’t wait to go rent it!

  3. Thanks for the honest review. I can see my 8 year old voicing your daughter’s thoughts on the movie. I , on the other hand, can see myself enjoying this.

  4. I so appreciate reading reviews about movies that are not the blockbusters that get all of the attention. With having 4 tween granddaughter’s, I always like to find movies as well that will teach some type of life lessons as these movies tend to hit home more than just having the “talk”. Thank you so much for the review of this movie and hope you will continue to review more movies that aren’t the blockbusters.

    1. Thank you for the kind words, Birdiebee! We’re trying to incorporate more variety, including movie reviews. I’ve even considered having the kids write about movies from their perspective.
