Thanks to everyone who participated in my Thanksgiving Can Be Affordable giveaway. Walmart provided a fantastic deal with their "Thanksgiving Dinner for 8 for $20" and my readers carried the theme well. There were some great money-saving ideas and recipes shared. Thank you!

Ultimately, I only have two cards to give away and those winners (as determined by Random.org) are:
#127 Tamara B
#196 Jay

The first winning comment was actually a bonus entry - a recipe for Homemade Baked Mac and Cheese! Yum! I guess Random.org likes Mac and cheese!

Congratulations Tamara B and Jay! Watch your email for details on how to claim your prize. If one of the winners fails to claim their prize within 72 hours, #217 (haydensmommy05) will be the lucky alternate winner.

Thanks again to Mom Central (and Walmart) for providing the prizes for this giveaway!

I had to laugh recently when my daughter said "I feel like the ground is shaking". We were upstairs in her room and she's right, the floor was rumbling. She was too young when we moved from Los Angeles to remember what an earthquake felt like. And although an earthquake is not unheard of here in Iowa, that wasn't the cause this time.

Instead, downstairs in the family room, DH was enjoying his XBox 360. He was engaged in a game of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra that was sent to us compliments of Foghorn PR. Shortly after receiving the game, our XBox decided to go on the blink (and that's really putting it nicely) but we're up and running again now. Whew.

Anyway, so he was playing the game and it was absolutely booming. I mean, honestly, it's total warfare so shouldn't it come with full artillery sounds? What's the point of having a sound system hooked up to the XBox 360 if it isn't cranked up for all the fun stuff? So I finished tucking Miss M in, shut her bedroom door, walked away giggling and being grateful that I wasn't in California explaining earthquakes.

Now, about the game. What did DH think?
Platforms: It's available for the XBox 360, Nintendo Wii and DS as well as the PS3, PS2 and PSP. We opted for the XBox 360 version over the Nintendo Wii because this seemed like one of those games where better graphics would translate to better game play.

Back-story: The game is based on the G.I. Joe original story-line and is supported by the G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra movie that was in theaters this past summer and just came out on DVD a few weeks ago. As you play the game, you have the option of creating your own G.I. Joe team - selecting from 12 characters such as Ripcord, Snake Eyes, Duke and Heavy Duty. For someone in tune with the plot line, creating the team is much more personal than it was for DH who is just somewhat familiar with it.

Violence level: It's war. There's shooting. Things are getting blown up. There's some blood but not as much as watching a horror movie (or real-life war stuff). DH said he wouldn't recommend it for really young kids, but someone 10 or older shouldn't be overwhelmed by it.

Game play: I've always considered myself not-as-clueless as the average almost 40 year old mom. Having played games like Asheron's Call and World of Warcraft, I learned a bit of gamer lingo. However, DH threw out a few terms that sent me to gamer-geek lingo school. Basically, I learned what games "on rails" are versus "linear" and "non-linear". A game "on rails" more or less means you are along for the ride. Think roller coaster or train. You stop along the way for activities but pretty much get back on board without any say in what way you go. If it's "linear" then you have some choices but are pretty much on rails for the game's story-line. If the game is "non-linear" then you make the game yours (think "The Sims"). G.I. Joe is a linear game. You have the ability to choose whether to shoot this tour or that one first but once you achieve a certain goal, the game moves you forward to the next designated mission location/goal.

So how does that impact the actual game play? Games on rails are great for younger players because it requires less decision making. So with respect to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, since it is linear, it's great for younger players (factoring in violence levels) or for players who enjoy working toward the end-game. And if you know someone who is a huge G.I. Joe fan, then it's a no-brainer.

Once again, thanks to Foghorn PR for providing this game for us (cough, DH, cough) to review.

Ever since the kids got old enough to sit through full-length motion pictures, we've been in heaven. If it's a G-rated movie, chances are that we've been to see it... except for the occasional one that gets put on timeout because the girls weren't behaving. Yes, we're a timeout family. While toy timeouts work sometimes, if the kids incur a penalty when we're en route to a movie then they are forbidden from seeing it until it comes out on DVD, VOD or TV. Other than that, movies are a huge deal for us. We go all out for popcorn and snacks, too. Because we go often enough, we even have a frequent flier pass for the movie theater - which gives us free movie passes, popcorn or a drink after a certain number of points are accumulated.

Although we get some stuff free, for the most part, we're shelling out for the trips (thank you, matinee price). If the kids are behaving, it's a reward for everyone... It's family time. It's quality time. And it's usually a lot of fun for all of us.

Then I found out that General Mills would pay for us to see a movie. And you too. The only thing better than a good movie is a good FREE movie. By any chance do you eat Honey Nut Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Trix or Reese’s Peanut Butter Puffs cereals? Well, from now until June 30, 2010, you can cash in codes that are found on specially marked boxes of those cereals. While the program allows you to cash in your codes until June 30, 2010... I didn't find details anywhere stating how long these boxes (with codes) would be available on the shelves.

Here's all you have to do:
Purchase specially marked boxes of the above mentioned General Mills cereals.
Enter two codes from any two specially marked boxes of General Mills cereal.
Print your free movie ticket certificate and take it to a participating theater to receive one free movie admission!

Want more than one ticket? Just purchase additional boxes of cereal. It's that easy. If you're a coupon shopper, you can watch for sales on General Mills cereals and use coupons. Then convert your cereal into General Mills e-Movie Cash.

We used our tickets to go see Where the Wild Things Are with the kids. It's a good movie, but not one that has you dancing in your seats. It does, however, teach a great lesson.

How about you? Are you a movie-goer? Do you look for any particular type of movie or just go to what looks good? Have you ever wanted to see a movie but changed your mind because it got poor reviews? One of DH's favorite movies got horrible reviews from the critics but we went to see it anyhow... and glad we did! So, maybe if you didn't have to pay for the tickets, you would consider seeing something you wouldn't otherwise see? Or maybe you would actually venture TO a movie while you normally wait until it's released before you see it. Well, here's your chance to score four free tickets, compliments of General Mills and MyBlogSpark. As a bonus, you'll even receive a coupon for one free box of any General Mills cereal! Ready? Here's the scoop...

The Prize: Movie Moments Prize Pack (approx value $54) including 4 e-movie cash certificates and one coupon for a box of General Mills cereal.

Our family recently had dinner with family friends when hubby's mom visited from out of town. After a nice meal, our hostess offered us some homemade pie - rhubarb or apple. When she brought it all to the table, she brought along a brick of cheese. Now, I have to tell you, she makes wonderful pies. I decided to have a small piece of each (yes, I love pie) as well as a small piece of the cheese (yes, I love cheese). DH had filled up on the meat and potatoes so he passed on both the pie and the cheese.

I realize the point of the cheese being served alongside was because many people put a piece of cheese on top of their apple pie. Me? Nope. I'm not closed minded, it just isn't my preference. When the movie Ratatouille came out, the rat explained that sometimes two foods taste good alone but when you put them together, it's even better. Even my youngest daughter understood that concept. As I said before, I love pie and I love cheese so I don't see the need to mix the flavors... even if it does provide a heavenly new taste.

A few weeks later, DH and I were helping my dad paint his garage while my mom was hosting a brunch for some of her friends. It was casual so mom had planned for us to eat with them during brunch and we talked about all kinds of things... including pie. One of mom's friends proudly announced that she finally had mastered an old family pie recipe - complete with cheddar cheese on top. My dad, who never met a pie he didn't like, asked "Cheese? On pie?" DH interjected "Yeah, I just learned about it yesterday when Nicole's Hickory Farms basket arrived." I was surprised that neither knew of this custom!

What DH was referring to is one of the cheeses in the Hickory Farms Family Gathering basket that I received from Mom Central on behalf of Hickory Farms as part of a blog tour campaign. It was named "Apple Pie Cheddar". He asked "What's with that?" And I explained that some people eat cheddar cheese on their apple pie. Then I shrugged. Apparently it's good, but I still don't see the need to ruin a perfectly good piece of cheese.

I signed up for the campaign because I love Hickory Farms products. As Christmas nears, I hate the crowds at the mall, but I enjoy checking out the Hickory Farms kiosk that only shows up at this time of year. For as long as I can remember, I've loved summer sausage. Oh, and have I mentioned that I love cheese? Well, this basket not only contained 2 Beef Summer Sausages but also two bricks of the Apple Pie Cheddar, a Ham Summer Sausage, a Pennsylvania Dutch Edam, Hot Mustard, Crackers and a cheese slicer. They arrived in a pretty basket that has now been repurposed to my medicine cabinet to organize all the cold medicines!

The foods at Hickory Farms are always great. The cheeses were tasty, as was the sausage. The cheese slicer, although not necessary for slicing cheese, worked like a charm. My only complaint with this basket is that it was filled with so much shredding to make it pretty that it was almost too much. But at least it's just paper and not something like packing peanuts!

It's also important to note that Hickory Farms has a social responsibility side, also. This year, Hickory Farms is donating to Share Our Strength. For each basket purchased, they are donating a portion to the Share Our Strength cause. In addition, shipping to APO/FPO addresses is FREE. So if you want to send some love to one of our brave troops, here's a great opportunity for you to save the shipping costs.

If you are looking for gift ideas, check out the inventory at your nearest store or order online. These baskets are wonderful for giving as gifts but also work well when you're entertaining. If you don't want an entire basket, you can purchase some items separately. But Hickory Farms isn't just about sausage and cheese baskets. As many times as I've been to the Hickory Farms kiosk at the mall, I've never realized they sold sweets! Various fruit baskets, as well as baked items like fudge, cakes, cheesecakes, tortes and other pastries! Their website even boasts such items as turkeys, hams and appetizers.

While I thought I was a Hickory Farms aficionado when I signed up for the campaign, I now realize I wasn't even close to knowing all that they offer. Next time I'm at the mall, I'll be paying more attention.

Thanks again to Mom Central and Hickory Farms for providing this delicious sample to review! Be sure to check out what they have to offer.

Lately I haven't been as good about clipping coupons as I could be. It isn't that I don't like doing it, I just haven't put forth the effort. In reality, with the economy what it is, I should be focusing even more than I used to.

My frugal tendencies are nothing new... Just the other day, hubby was recounting a story for my dad. Way back in the day when Prodigy was one of the few places online to gather for information and trading coupons, I was a very active coupon-clipper. I traded the baby and pet coupons from the Sunday paper for household products and cereal. It was not uncommon for me to get loss-leader cereal for nothing or next to nothing. Actually, I purchased it faster than we could consume it. So atop the cabinet in my small apartment kitchen, there was a row of cereal lined up neatly and looked like books on a bookshelf.

These days, I spend more time sorting through all the weekly advertisements to haul on my regular grocery shopping trip to Walmart. Sure, I gather coupons if I have the time before going. But usually, I'm happy just to have Walmart match the competitors' ads.

Speaking of grocery shopping... Unless you haven't looked at a calendar lately, you realize that this upcoming Thursday is Thanksgiving. When people put together their Thanksgiving shopping list, many lists contain the same basic staples: turkey, potatoes, gravy, stuffing, green beans, cranberry sauce, rolls and of course, dessert. Although different variations occur from there, those items are pretty common. Thinking through the cooking aspect of it can be overwhelming but in times of economic difficulties, the financial part of the dinner is more devastating. A few dollars here, some more there... some people may forgo the big meal because they don't feel they can afford it.

In true Walmart fashion, not everything has to be out of your price range. A Walmart advertisement arrived in the local paper almost simultaneously as a blog tour invitation from Mom Central. Both referenced the Thanksgiving promotion of "Turkey dinner for eight for as low as $20". Money saving tips and recipes can be found on Walmart's Holiday Meals site. Additional details of Walmart’s $20 Thanksgiving feast are there too. Here's what the feast includes:
  • One 12-pound Grade A turkey*
  • Three 11 to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables
  • Two 14-ounce cans Ocean Spray cranberry sauce
  • Three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing
  • One 5-pound bag of red potatoes
  • One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
  • One 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake
(*Prices and availability may vary in AK, HI, OK, NM, WI and at Walmart.com. Prices on select Grade A turkeys begin November 4; limit two turkeys per customer; weights and brands vary by store. Quantities are limited; no rain checks. All prices do not include tax.)

It's a great promotion and I'm glad to be able to let people know about it. But as a thank you from Mom Central and Walmart for posting about this promotion, I have received a $30 Walmart gift card. The great news for you, other than this money-saving Thanksgiving dinner, is that Mom Central and Walmart have sent along two additional $30 Walmart gift cards for me to share with two of my readers! So if you're a Walmart shopper and plan to do some holiday shopping there, keep reading for details on how to enter this great giveaway... compliments of Walmart and Mom Central!

After trick-or-treating with my brother and sister-in-law, we sat around their kitchen just socializing. My cousin and his family live in their neighborhood also and stopped inside to warm up during their trek around back home. My cousin's wife reminisced about their recent trip to Chicago to American Girl to celebrate their daughter's birthday. They put together an entire weekend around the store!

Over the past few years, more and more I hear of mother-daughter junkets to Chicago to the American Girl store. Chicago is a few hours from here so it's quite a trip just to spend the day at a store that centers around dolls. Although I'm sure my daughters would love it, it's just not something we have pursued. It's a destination place and I continue to hear moms raving about what a great bonding experience it is.

But it got me thinking... there sure are a lot of girl parties and girl outings, but what is out there for boys? My nephew celebrated his birthday gaming with friends, but other than hitting a ball game with dad, what kind of father-son junkets are there? I was talking to a friend recently who has two boys the same ages as my girls and she said there really isn't anything. When I was at BlogHer over the summer, I had the chance to meet with staff from the local Ridemakerz store. They sponsored an event the night before the Ford presentation and brought along some of their products for us to assemble and play with. I mentioned the Ridmakerz concept to my friend and she couldn't wait to tell her husband.

So what exactly am I talking about when I say Ridemakerz? Many families are familiar with the build-a-bear concept where kids go through various design stages to create their very own stuffed animal. The Build-a-Bear business model was the inspiration for Ridemakerz (and Build-A-Bear Workshop is actually an investor in Ridemakerz.) Basically, you go to the store and design your own toy car. I'm using the word loosely there, because depending on what you do, it may end up being a big-boy gadget instead of just a toy.

We participated in a mock assembly at the pre-BlogHer event but have only walked through the actual store. Although you can create a car online, it's really not the same experience as fidgeting with it in front of you. You can walk through the whole process online to see the various steps.
Chooze: Select from several body styles followed by Street or Monster chassis.
Sonicize: Pick what types of sounds your car will emit.
Motorize: Decide to have it free wheel or radio controlled.
Mobilize: Choose the wheels and tires!
Customize: Add the frills. Hood scoopz, decalz, ground effectz, accessories and more.
Personalize: Create a personalize license plate.

You can even create a certificate of title for your new vehicle.

It's a cool concept and you can go as simple or diverse as you like. In my opinion, it's a great bonding experience for dads and kids. It's also a great destination for youth groups and clubs or even for organizations such as car clubs (yes, adults can play too). They offer bashes, as well, with varying pricing packages. Both my girls really enjoyed putting the car together so I can't imagine what a boy would think!

Here are a few of the pitfalls with Ridemakerz: There are only a handful of locations - not nearly as plentiful as Build-A-Bear. Mainly because it's very time intensive. It isn't a place that you can just pop into during a regular trip to the mall. It needs to be a planned trip - as in you go to the mall to enjoy the Ridemakerz experience (and maybe hang out at the mall a little before/after). The other problem is that the price can easily creep up on you. Each time you add features, you add to the price. Just like in real life, if you want your car tricked out with every gadget, it's going to cost you.

Just like many mothers and daughters enjoy that special trip to American Girl, fathers and sons (or even daughters!) should look at some bonding time at Ridemakerz. So with Christmas approaching, consider putting together outing plans to the Ridemakerz nearest you. It's bonding that you can't put a price on.

If you want more information about Ridemakerz, visit their website, follow them on Twitter or become a fan on Facebook!

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary Ridemakerz car as part of the pre-BlogHer event. But these are my honest opinions regardless of that. I truly believe that Ridemakerz is a great concept and can provide wonderful family bonding opportunities.

Mornings around here have been less than perfect. Miss K, I've discovered, is not a morning person. As I try to wake her up, she moans and says "not yet mom" and all I see is a teenager grumbling "Just five more minutes." Need I remind you that she's only in kindergarten... it's going to be a long road ahead of us.

But at the same time, Miss M, my 1st grader who basks in the glory of being the "good" child in the morning, rushes to get her chores done. She knows that whenever she does, I'll praise her in hopes that her sister will see that it's good to get ready for school on time.

So each morning, as Miss M finishes up early and has time to kill, she asks "Can I (insert request here)?" Sometimes she wants to play her Nintendo DS, sometimes watch TV. If she has quite a bit of time, she asks to play her latest video game on the Wii, JumpStart Escape from Adventure Island (due to be released tomorrow, November 17, 2009.) We tested and reviewed JumpStart Pet Rescue for the Wii in September and I felt my girls were a little too old for it (target market age 3-6). While they thoroughly enjoyed it, I felt they needed something a little more challenging. Jump Start Escape from Adventure Island targets kids ages 5-9 which is more appropriate for my girls so Jump Start / Knowledge offered us the chance to try it out and I certainly couldn't refuse!

Well, as a reward for Miss M getting ready on time, she's been able to play JumpStart Escape from Adventure Island quite a bit. And since I'm usually scrambling to ensure that her little sister doesn't miss the bus, I didn't get to watch her playing it the first few times that she did. Even in a different part of the house, I could hear her yell "This game is AWESOME!" Knowing JumpStart's history of educational games, I asked "Have you been learning anything or is it just a game?" She shook her head and said "It's just a game."

Awesome. She's totally right. What parent doesn't love a kid playing a learning game but think they're not really learning anything?

Later, after watching her a bit, I pulled out the game manual and asked Miss M which games she was playing. I pointed to "Rubble Trouble" and asked "Do you plan that one?" She said "Yeah. I play that." To which I responded, "Honey, that game teaches you math." "What about 'Jet Pack'?" "Yes, that one too." It teaches reading. She said that she really likes playing "Foot Frenzy and Goon Lagoon" too. Foot Frenzy practices dance, beat and rhythm. Goon Lagoon didn't identify a specific learning activity. Those are just a few of the land activities. Then slide down for underwater equivalents of those activities.

While some aspects of the game aren't really education-based, such as modifying the appearance of your Jumpee (avatar) or the house, others work on math, reading and rhythm. The picture of Miss shows her strutting her stuff in the fashion show. As you can see from the "Bubble Trouble" pictures, to continue to advance through the game, the player needs to do a variety of activities on various levels. Each activity allows the player to earn sand dollars and there are multiple lessons on three levels as well as easy, medium and hard difficulties. The game encouraged Miss M to play each of the different activities in order to achieve the final goal... earning helium tanks to repair the blimp and get off the island!

I wondered whether the game would be fun for Miss K, so I asked her if she had played it at all. Her sister had let her nudge in on it once. Before dinner tonight, I let her have a shot at it. Then I asked if she was able to play it okay or if she had trouble. Miss K said she could play it fine... and when I asked which JumpStart she liked better, she excitedly exclaimed "This one!" That surprised me because she really loves Pet Rescue. Although she's capable of playing games like "Bubble Trouble" where the goal is to maneuver the avatar through a field to find the correct answer. Sometimes it was completing the series of letters "J, K, L, _, _, _" and options would include the correct answer as well as some incorrect ones. In other levels of the same activity, the goal would be to find the opposite of the given word. I was delighted to see the range of lessons within just that one activity.

However, Miss K pretty much only wants to do activities that involve changing outfits or walking the runway. That pretty much explains real life around here so it's only fitting that it plays into the game that way.

To sum it up, it's a great educational game and it's for the Wii. It keeps kids attention while they are practicing basic learning skills. There really isn't much down side to the game except that I wish it encouraged the kids to be standing rather than sitting on the couch!

Thanks to JumpStart and Knowledge Adventure for providing this game for us to review. It's been a great learning experience even though the girls don't realize it! Your kids not old enough for Jump Start Escape from Adventure Island? Then give JumpStart Pet Rescue a shot. Don't have a Wii? Check out the online game! For more information about JumpStart, find them on Facebook, Twitter or read their blog!

Fate is a funny thing...

As I sat down this evening and looked at the entries in the Pink Together Inspiring Hope Giveaway, I was pleased to see so many positive comments regarding the Pink Together website. And my heart went out for those who responded that they have lost someone to cancer. When I was done, I headed to random.org to grab the winner's comment number.

Lo and behold, as fate would have it, comment #54 was drawn. It was a comment left by "Anonymous" that she will be celebrating her 6 year anniversary cancer free after being diagnosed with breast cancer. The winner was selected solely by the random integer generator but I think this prize couldn't go to a more appropriate person.

Congratulations to bkittie for winning the battle against Breast Cancer as well as this inspiring gift package. Watch your email for how to claim your prize!

Thanks, once again, to MyBlogSpark for sponsoring this giveaway!

Everybody has heard the phrase "Stop and smell the roses." Do you? Seriously stop and smell the roses?

If you're a parent, you've probably had people tell you "Enjoy them (your kids) while you can because they grow up fast." I lost count of how many times I've heard it. But only now, as my daughters are in 1st grade and Kindergarten, am I really beginning to understand. I see new moms carrying an infant and it seems like only a short time ago that mine were that small. I've tried to spend a lot of quality time with my girls but in hindsight, I'm not sure I have been the best mom I can be.

They're growing up so fast and I often catch myself saying "Maybe later" or "Not right now" when they ask me to do something with them. Maybe what I need to be doing is making a point of playing with them more often... doing those crafts with them that are sitting in boxes in the closet... maybe I need to stop and smell the roses.

Frigidaire and Jennifer Garner are teaming up to urge Moms to use the time we got when we turned the clocks back on November 1st to make CHANGE for children. Apparently I'm not the only mom who needs to rethink the number of hours in the day, the number of days in our lives and the quality of the time we're spending with our families.

From now until December 31st, whenever you pledge to spend an hour with your child, Frigidaire will donate $1 (between $45,000 and $50,000) to Save the Children's U.S. Programs. Get that? Frigidaire is donating $1 for each time you pledge to spend an hour with your kids that you didn't otherwise make time for. While they're encouraging us to change our time-spending habits, the "CHANGE" in "Make Time for Change" refers to the initiative: Creating Healthy, Active, and Nurturing Growing-up Environments. In addition to the donation Frigidaire is making, each time you make a pledge, you will be entered for a chance to win a new Frigidaire Professional double wall oven. So not only can you pledge to 'smell the roses' with your children (with a chance to win a Frigidaire oven), but you'll also be helping families in less developed areas of the United States. If the cause so moves you, financial contributions can be made directly to Save the Children.

Now about that oven... According to the Official Rules, the winner will receive " One (1) Frigidaire Professional double wall oven in stainless steel. (Approximate Retail Value ("ARV") of Prize: $2,999)." It's BEAUTIFUL, isn't it? Want to win one? Get to pledging for a chance!

For disclosure purposes, I did not receive any compensation for this post. I'm posting it as a public service campaign presented by MomSelect (BSM Media). The only potential compensation I could receive is if my name is randomly drawn by MomSelect to receive a Frigidaire Professional Wall Oven that is being provided by Frigidaire specifically to a MomSelect blogger! Good luck to everyone who participates in this Frigidaire special event!

I love music. I've gone through different stages in my life where I gravitated to different styles of music - Pop, Rock, Oldies... But I'm at a point now where I love listening to almost any kind of music. My late uncle, Ken, summed it up best when he said to me "Am I singing because I'm happy or am I happy because I'm singing?"

Music has that magical effect on people. Back in 1996, I recall going to the movies to see "That Thing You Do" with DH. As we walked to our car afterward, I had a spring in my step and both DH and I commented about how much we enjoyed the movie and all the music. I truly believe that music can alter your emotional state.

A few weeks back, I received a copy of Michael Buble's new CD, Crazy Love through a One2One Network campaign. I sat down and listened to the songs and even logged onto YouTube to watch videos.

Guess what happened.

It made me smile. Listening to his music made me happy. Michael Buble's upbeat music in a throwback style was toe-tapping. It reminded me of many of the songs I listened to during my days of listening to older (crooner) music and singers like Sinatra. While many people, including Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra felt 'crooner' was a negative term, to me it exemplifies a style of music... and has nothing but positive connotations. Michael Buble should be proud to be deemed a modern-day crooner.

As it so happened, my mother-in-law was in town visiting when I received this CD. During a shopping trip with her to Borders, I heard the CD being piped through the store. I nudged my MIL and excitedly said "This is that singer I was telling you about!" As we continued to walk around, I caught a glimpse of her swinging her step to the beat of the song "Haven't Met You Yet". I laughed and said "It's catchy, isn't it?!" She smiled and said "I'm going to be part of your blog post, aren't I?" Yup, MIL. You sure are. But it's nothing to be ashamed of... I was dancing along to the music in the middle of Borders, too. Everyone should just be glad we weren't singing along.

If you love music or are just in need of a pick-me-up, stop by Michael Buble's website and take a second to listen to some of his songs. If you enjoy what you hear, become a fan on Facebook, follow him on Twitter, join Bungalow-B, his Fan Club or you can get his songs from iTunes or Amazon! It's fun music and I'm pretty confident that you'll find yourself tapping your foot to the beat.

Thanks to One2One Network for providing me with a promotional CD and introducing me to this fabulous singer! As part of this campaign, I have the opportunity to randomly win a gift certificate from One2One Network. No compensation (other than the promo CD) was received for this post and these are my honest opinions of Michael Buble's work!

My six year old daughter is currently weighting in around 38 pounds. Her 5 year old sister is in the upper 20s. While they are small for their age, they are both very healthy. Their small size runs in the family and we're confident that as they get older, they will catch up with their peers just as I did.

It's interesting that when new adults meet them, they seldom guess their ages correctly. Why? It's not simply because they small for their age... it's also because many kids these days are large for their age. Studies show that childhood obesity has been on the rise... but that shouldn't come as a shock to anyone because the issue is constantly in the news. Even the First Lady is addressing it.

So as a parent, what do we do? We can encourage the kids to get outside and play. We can limit the amount of time they spend on the computer or with their gaming systems. But as I sit here at the computer munching on Halloween candy, I'm certainly not leading by example. What we need to do is change our habits across the board as a family and eating right is a great first step.

Even when the kids want a snack or something different for lunch, there are healthy options. Both my girls snack on cashews, hard boiled eggs and cheese, Miss K loves granola bars and sunflower seeds and Miss M doesn't have much of a sweet tooth. Yet when I pack their lunches, we need some balance and variety.

Through a campaign presented by Team Mom (Child's Play Communications), I had the opportunity to check out a variety of healthier - yet kid-friendly - options. You may have noticed the "Eating Right" line of foods showing up on shelves and in the freezer section of your store. But were you aware that Safeway, in cahoots with Warner Brothers (yes, I said cahoots because Looney Tunes characters are what I think of when I hear the word cahoots) created a subsidiary line of Eating Right products just for kids. It's called Eating Right Kids and it has various everyday products that have been modified to be a little healthier. Or at a minimum, are promoted by a friendly character to help encourage kids to agree to these healthier foods.

As an example, we tested the Eating Right Kids pasta rings. They are whole wheat and I fully expected them to taste, um, like whole wheat pasta. But I tried them alongside the girls, as did DH, and we all thought they tasted great! They don't look any different than the pasta "O's" that kids are used to but these are made from whole wheat.

Both of the juices that we tried, apple and white grape cherry, were delicious. Not only did both the girls request they be added to their lunch boxes, but I also encouraged them to drink a few at home so I could have a little bit of it. The fruit cups, typical lunchbox stuff, tasted just like other fruit cups. I didn't have a competitor's product to compare it to but fruit, in lieu of junk is always a plus. I was surprised by the granola bars, with dried cranberries and blueberries and a touch of chocolate. Those seem more suited for a more mature crowd, but Miss K gobbled them up!

Of all the Eating Right Kids products we tried, the only one that met with dissatisfaction was the fruit punch applesauce. The kids tasted it and wouldn't eat another bite. I grimaced and was frustrated with them for being difficult... then tried it myself and quickly apologized to them. I didn't like it much either. It wasn't so much the taste as the consistency. As I said, everything else we tried met with approval from all members of the household.

What I didn't appreciate is finding a product that could fit so well into our family then not be able to find it in any of the stores. As I mentioned before, the Eating Right Kids product line is the brainchild of Safeway Foods and it hasn't made it mainstream into other stores yet like its parent line, Eating Right. But every little step toward better eating habits for us (or any family) is progress.

Does the Eating Right Kids line of products sound like something your family would eat? Thanks to Team Mom, here's your chance to win a gift pack that includes a variety of their products.

The Prize: Eating Right Kids Gift Pack (Valued at approx $75). Gift pack includes an assortment of non-perishable Eating Right Kids food products in a thermal lunch bag, an Eating Right Kids reusable shopping tote, T-Shirt, Plush Bugs Bunny and an information brochure.
